Running has become the latest rage amongst all age groups these days. More and more people are getting inclined towards fitness and thereof moving towards "running" to achieve their personal goals of fitness and strength. In the process of building up the cardiovascular fitness required for long distance running, almost every runner has felt some or the other kind of injuries or pains in their running lifetime. This happens when we tend to achieve more in a short period of time without proper knowledge and right guidance. There are a lot of conditions that can impact running for long distance runners. Long distance running can lead to overuse of different muscles and joints. It can affect almost all joints in the body chain and can cause many possible conditions such as –
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Lumbar Spine compression
  • Shin Splints
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome
  • Calf Pain
  • Patello Femoral Syndrome
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Hamstring Strain
  • Groin Pain
  • Pelvic floor pain
Causes Of These Conditions
When runners run long distances, their body can compensate for some weakness in the body part leading to the compression/overuse of the joint/muscle above or below that part in the body chain. For Instance, if a runner has weak glutes, it can lead to overuse of the calf and back muscle causing pain in the muscle and making it difficult for the runner to perform with his/her full capacity or not run at all. If a runner runs with too much lumbar extension or increased arch in the lower back, it can eventually lead to lower back pain because of disc degeneration. If a person is running leading with the head, it can start to put undue strain on the neck muscles causing pain in the neck which can sometimes radiate to the arms /upper back/head. When a runner is trying to achieve the speed required to finish a race faster without training the right muscles, it can lead to injuries. Lack of stretching of the overused muscles can put undue stress on the muscles used while running can also lead to more damage to the body.
How FMTTM Helps
A Functional Manual Therapist can help runners by assessing their running pattern and identifying the overused or weak parts or compensatory patterns if any and help them in prediction and prevention of future injuries or treating them if they have any acute or chronic pain and help them achieve their full potential. Teaching efficient running posture will make an individual more efficient and enhance their running speed and endurance. By being in the right posture keeps the body in the right alignment that helps get our automatic core engagement making it more efficient and reducing the injuries with long running.
FMTTM can teach the runners an efficient training regime that will help them to stretch the overused muscles and keeping them flexible along with making the weak muscles stronger to decelerate the process of joint degeneration.
