Pilates for a whole new body

Sept. 04, 2011. The Times Of India

“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you will have a whole new body” — Joseph Pilates

Mind-body fitness is truly the mantra of our times, for we now acknowledge health has to be holistic. But Joe Pilates realised this important connection nearly 90 years ago while developing the unique system of exercises that bears his name. The millions who opted for Pilates since then have realised the truth of his words that, “A few well-designed movements properly performed in a balanced sequence are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion.”

Pilates, writing in 1945 about Contrology, his gentle yet focussed path to ‘a return to life’, called it a system that “develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” Little wonder then that Pilates won over show business and sports communities worldwide with the promise of a slender yet strong and supple body — and a mind to match.

In the past few decades, it caught the imagination of so many people that a US federal court ruled in 2000 that Pilates is a generic form of exercise! This recognition of its popularity, naturally, has led to many developments and variations on the Pilates method. But Delhi-ites now have a rare chance to benefit from Classical Pilates right here in the capital, at sessions conducted by Erin King, a Triple Certified instructor from New York.

Classical Pilates stays as close as possible to the original Pilates premise — mind control over muscle control — and has a strong rehabilitative effect. Gravity gives the initial stabilisation by bringing the stomach muscles toward the spine as a person begins by lying down; then successive exercises on special apparatus lead to the vertical position through controlled movement. After a few days of basic workouts, the instructor adds exercises based on individual needs.

Having made several Power Pilates instructional DVDs and appeared on Good Morning America, Erin King will be conducting one-on-one sessions from September 7 onwards on the four classic Pilates apparatus — Mat, Reformer, Cadillac and High Chair — as well as group classes on the Mat, thanks to TIMES WELLNESS, Delhi. She will also hold weekly pre-natal group classes. As the classes will be open to all levels, beginners are in luck too!
